Los Angeles-duo Ruby Haunt has mostly dabbled around genres of new wave and dream pop music. Formerly known as Haunt), Wyatt Ininns and Victor Pakpour are creating music that falls into the realm of influences like Red House Painters and Low. 2019’s The Middle of Nowhere is a record of patience and sonic nooks, and the duo continues north of that sound profile.
“Sunbelt” is a sizzling 9-minute slowcore ballroom dance. Submerged in seamless loop of quiet and steadiness, the track is both dark and hushed but uplifting, even in a situation of tumult. Feelings of rumination and cold serenity are cast with hushed vocals and instrumentation that never seem to reach their peak. Despite that, “Sunbelt” leaves us with resolve and solace.
