Otto Rex, a four-piece situated in Oakland, CA, has a peculiar sound that we can’t put our fingers on. Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Austin Dillon, the band is comprised of transplants from various parts of America, mostly in part by Craigslist. Not hunkered down to a dominant genre (or microgenre), the band’s varying geographical origins may have a slight hand in this.

“Sweet Tooth,” the lead single from their debut EP Icebergs, floods your ears with swaths of bendy licks, lightly varnished with hints of jazz. Traces of grunge, sludge, jazz, and space rock all converge to conjure up unsettling grooves. Is it space grunge? Sludge pop? Post-sludge-jazz? Or it could be something entirely new.
