marisol-ice-creamMarisol is an elaborate concept put together by Mount Vernon, NY native Robert Trevisan. Described as a love-obsessed” singer, Marisol is one of the dueling alter-egos that make up this project. Along with producer DJ Lovey Dovey, Motherfucker Ice Cream chronicles their ruinous relationship in five funk-R&B-inspired tracks.

It’s complicated” might be the easiest way to describe the story of Marisol and DJ Lovey Dovey who are in a foray of getting back together and then to only split shortly after. The provocative opener Touch Myself,” has Marisol trying to get through their work week with some peyote and self-gratification. Rubbing on the tropes from synth-powered 80’s soundtracks (i.e. John Carpenter) with sultry funk, the music can feel a bit gaudy (like vaporwave), but its bizarre storyline is weirdly compelling.

Buzzing with stiff guitars that almost sounds like plastic strings,“I Don’t Worry About You,” the track fosters the silky grooves of Funkadelic with a familiar arpeggio. Lovey Dovey is an ode to Marisol’s affection with the flare of sexed-up R&B. The dancey But Maybe We Are Not Meant To Be… closes the eclectic EP and the Marisol and Lovey Dovey saga with somber disco-like zeal and a surreal skit. Keytars and autotune galore, Motherfucker Ice Cream stinks of everything that makes synthwave cheesy, but it’s off-beat concept and really catchy tracks makes it something that’s more than a guilty pleasure listen.
