“Really Meant” starts with the constant pulse of a synth and doesn’t move far past that for the entirety of the track. The drum strikes are to the point, highlighting the syllables of Utah’s vocal groove. Once the track gets into full swing it’s over, and Utah’s singing and carnival-funk synth line drop out to give room to a washed out guitar. Though the words don’t stick out on first listen, the feeling behind the vocal melody is felt. It’s consistent, beckoning, and honest. The track is an exciting teaser for johnny utah’s next release because it feels so upfront, like something that he wrote down quickly to tell someone before he forgot.
johnny utah’s had a big year. In January his self-titled album was released on Z Tapes, and promotion for his upcoming album is starting to pick up steam on his popular and prolific Twitter account. His newest single is an infectious bop, short form music that catches you quickly.
