I’m still trying to figure out what “mutant-pop” is. I tried the Internet, but only to rediscover the now defunct, Mutant Pop Records. Enter Billy Changer, solo artist with ties to synth-driven post-punk band, Corners. Initially part of a split album with fellow Corners bandmate, Tracy Bryant, Changer is re-releasing his self-titled debut on Lolipop Records.

Set on cruise control, deadbeat instrumentals coast on “Island Fever” as Changer’s breathy vocals are laid over muted guitar chunking, and sandy beats as he blames it on the “mutant pop” for the island fever. Like all of the tracks on the LP, “Island Fever” is subtly catchy, not needing the obvious hooks that louder surf-rock contemporaries rely on.
