Cosmic Child – “One Day We’ll Grow Up Soon And Nothing Will Matter In The End”

Guided by swaths of heavenly reverb, Cosmic Childs sparkling debut has been one of the “under the radar” releases of the year. From what I’ve been able to discern, the band had a miserable experience recording the record, even went as far to claim that the process “nearly killed” them. Recanting the pantheons of shoegaze, the band taps into the haunting hallmarks of bands like Slowdive, the Cocteau Twins, and the Pale Saints. The record didn’t go totally unnoticed, as the fine folks at Cellar Door Tapes took notice and released the untitled debut on tape last summer.

The beautiful closer, “One Day We’ll Grow Up Soon And Nothing Will Matter In The End” kicks up with cascading haze and bleary-eyed euphoria that could lend itself to a film’s conclusion. Vague sensations whir mysteriously throughout as they clash with noisy pulses of ecstasy. Incoherent vocals peer throughout the mesmerizing lagoon from time to time, kind of reminiscent to Kevin Shields a-la Loveless or Georgia Hubley. A patient and vivid burner, “One Day…” is one of the eight brilliant tracks that make up one of my favorites from last year.
